This course covers the techniques and application of a variety of search and recovery methods including:

  1. The planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards of search and recovery diving.
  2. Limited visibility diving and underwater navigation techniques.
  3. Proper techniques and safety considerations for object location, including the use of various search patterns, lines and reels.
  4. Proper techniques and safety considerations for recovery of objects using various lifting devices.

COURSE PRICE

REQUIRED AGE / CERTIFICATION LEVEL

  • Minimum Age: 12 years old and PADI Open Water certification, or have a qualifying certification from another organization


OR

  • Be certified as a PADI Open Water Diver, Junior Open Water Diver and PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty or have equivalent qualifying certifications from another training organization.


COURSE OVERVIEW

  • The Search and Recovery Course is an opportunity to see if you would enjoy diving to find things.  It is also a course where constructive planning is important and task loading must be managed to ensure safe diving.
  • Certification counts toward the PADI Master Scuba Diver Rating.
  • There are knowledge reviews in the PADI Night Diver manual which must be completed and reviewed by the instructor during a classroom session when you will also watch the PADI Night Diver video.
  • There are a total of 4 dives to be taken over a minimum of two days in the Search and Recovery Diver Course:

1.    Search and Recovery Dive One - By the end of this dive students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a methodical search of an area approximately 15 meters/50 feet by 15 meters/ 50 feet or other dimensions for the same area of search, to find a small submerged object.
  • Demonstrate a methodical search of an area approximately 30 meters/100 feet by 30 meters/ 100 feet or other dimensions for the same area of search, to find a submerged object not more than 10 kilograms/25 pounds negatively buoyant.
  • You must tie the following knots correctly: a bowline, two half hitches and a sheet bend, while underwater, wearing gloves.
  • Demonstrate how to safely rig and surface an object not more than 10 kilograms/25 pounds negatively buoyant using an appropriate lifting device.

2.    Search and Recovery Dive Two - By the end of this dive students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the expanding square search for a submerged object in an area approximately 18 meters/ 60 feet by 18 meters/ 60 feet or other dimensions for the same area of search, then use an appropriate lifting device to safely rig and bring to the surface an object found using the expanding square search pattern.

3.    Search and Recovery Dive Three - By the end of this dive students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the jack-stay search for a submerged object in an area approximately 60 meters by 60 meters/ 200 feet by 200 feet or other dimensions for the same area of search, then use an appropriate lifting device to safely rig and bring to the surface an object found using the jack-stay search method.

4.    Search and Recovery Dive Four - By the end of this dive students will be able to:

  • Organize, plan and conduct a search and recovery dive with a dive buddy.
  • Choose an appropriate search pattern and lifting method based on facts gathered about the lost object prior to diving.

STUDENTS TO PROVIDE

  • Mask, fins, snorkel, dive knife, gloves, a lift bag, rope and an underwater reel.
  • BCD, regulator, secondary air source, pressure gauge, compass and tanks can be rented from Lauderdale Diver.
