The PADI Digital Underwater Photographer course is a two-part introduction to digital underwater photography

COURSE COST

  • $325.00 per person
  • $425.00 per person – Private

REQUIRED AGE/CERTIFICATION LEVEL

  • Minimum age 10 years old with PADI Open Water certification/Junior Open Water certification or proof of equivalent certification by another training agency.
  • A snorkeler may take this course as there is no age limitation.

COURSE OVERVIEW

  • This course can be credited towards Master Scuba Diver certification and is a great way to achieve high quality underwater shots in the shortest possible time.

There are two dives in the Underwater Digital Photographer Course:

1.    Digital Photo Dive One - By the end of this dive, students will:

  • Enter the water safely wearing snorkeling or scuba equipment in a manner that protects the camera system from damage.
  • Immediately after entering the water, remove bubbles from the lens and housing and test the various camera housing controls for proper function.  Holding the camera lens down, being ready to lift the camera above water, if water is entering the housing.  Then take one submerged test shot and start the dive.
  • While snorkeling or scuba diving, demonstrate care for the environment by applying techniques that avoid damage.
  • If the camera is capable of manual white balance, students will white balance the camera underwater using the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer White Balance State.  If the camera is not capable of manual white balance, use different “scene” modes to bracket your shots to achieve the best results.
  • Take horizontal and vertical photos of a dive partner.  Practice holding the camera housing in such a manner to avoid blurred photos and obstructing the lens or viewfinder and varying the distance/angles to optimize shots.  Then take other pictures, while varying the angles and getting close to the subjects.
  • Exit the water safely at the end of the dive in a safe manner that protects the camera from damage.

2.    Digital Photo Dive Two - By the end of this dive, students will:

  • Independently assemble and test camera equipment prior to the dive.
  • Enter the water safely wearing snorkeling or scuba equipment in a manner that protects the camera system from damage.
  • Performing the dive using techniques that avoid damaging the environment.
  • Manually change the exposure, contract and sharpness by using the camera controls as appropriate to the camera system.  Practice getting good color composition through choice of subject, positioning, negative space and other compositional elements.
  • Demonstrate use of the PADI SEA Method by using the LCD monitor and/or histogram (if available on the camera) to evaluate exposure, sharpness and composition.
  • Exit the water safely at the end of the dive in a safe manner that protects the camera from damage.
